OpenArchives.gr is the largest online portal providing a single point of access to Greek scientific and cultural digital content of high quality. Developed and operated by the National Documentation Centre (EKT — Ethniko Kentro Tekmiriosis), it aggregates metadata from OAI-PMH-compatible collections maintained by libraries, archives, museums, academic institutions, and research organizations across Greece and Cyprus.
OpenArchives.gr has been in operation since 2006, when it was established by EKT as a metadata aggregator for Greek scientific content. It quickly became the largest online search portal for quality digital Greek scientific material. Since 2020, development of the platform has been supported by the National Information System of Research and Technology project, funded through the Public Sector Reform national programme. A redesigned, more user-friendly version of the platform was launched as part of this funded project.
The aggregator provides access to over 770,000 items from 80 collections contributed by 57 scientific organizations and research institutions. Holdings include academic journals, institutional repository content from universities and research bodies, doctoral theses, dissertations, books, conference proceedings, maps, grey literature, archival materials, and specialized collections in science, humanities, social sciences, and medicine. Notable content providers include Greek universities, the National Hellenic Research Foundation, and scientific associations from Greece and Cyprus.
OpenArchives.gr uses the Europeana Data Model (EDM) for metadata documentation and publishes linked data with semantic links to established vocabularies including the Getty Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT) and DBpedia. Items carry unique, permanent HTTP URIs. A Web API allows third-party applications to search and display aggregated content; access requires an API key. All content is freely accessible to users without registration for basic searching.
