Open Development Myanmar (ODMm) is an open data and open knowledge platform aggregating development-related data, maps, reports, news, and laws concerning Myanmar and the broader Mekong region. It is part of the Open Development Network (ODN), a coalition of organizations co-managing a common platform to promote transparency and informed decision-making for sustainable development across Southeast Asia.
The Open Development Initiative (ODI), a project of the East-West Management Institute (EWMI), has been active in the open data sector in the Mekong region since 2011. The Open Development Mekong platform, of which ODMm is the Myanmar country site, launched as an integrated regional open data platform in 2015 with five national websites and one regional website. The Myanmar portal was publicly launched around December 2016 with support from the USAID-funded Mekong Partnership for the Environment (MPE) and Phandeeyar: Myanmar Innovation Lab, which also trained regional journalists on data-driven reporting. In late 2018, the ODI expanded to regional Asia through a partnership with the Open Data for Development (OD4D) initiative launched by IDRC.
The portal provides access to statistics, interactive maps, downloadable datasets, reports, news summaries, and laws and regulations related to Myanmar's development landscape. Key thematic areas include natural resources, land rights, Special Economic Zones, foreign investment, gender data, health, and environment. The platform emphasizes responsible open data standards that are inclusive of ethnic and indigenous rights and gender sensitivities.
All original materials produced by Open Development Myanmar are licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0 and are freely accessible without registration. The platform aggregates publicly available information vetted through a careful verification process. It is managed as a private non-profit open data and open knowledge media group and is not affiliated with any governmental or intergovernmental agency.
