The Online Finding Aid (OFA) is the digital discovery and access portal of Arkib Negara Malaysia (National Archives of Malaysia), enabling researchers worldwide to search, browse, and order archival materials from Malaysia's national repository. Developed under the MyCreative Content (MyCC) Project, OFA provides online access to the metadata and digital content of the National Archives' extensive holdings.
The development of the OFA application originated with a Project Proposal Paper prepared by the National Archives' Finding Aids Section on 14 January 2005. The Online Finding Aids Committee was established in 2008 and the system was developed as part of the MyCC Project, which was initiated in late 2011. The project encompassed four main components: digitisation of archived document materials, digitisation of archived audio-visual materials, upgrade of the data centre, and development of the OFA application. The National Archives of Malaysia itself was established in 1957 as the Public Records Office, renamed in 1963, and moved to its current location in Jalan Duta, Kuala Lumpur, in 1982.
Through OFA, users can access the National Archives' collections which include files, publications, newspapers and magazines, agreement letters, audio-visual materials, Royal Archives, personal letters, private records and archives, microfilms, photographs, maps, plans, and charts. The system integrates search across the COMPASS, AMS, and MAMS database systems, which store different types of archival material. OFA covers the collections of the Kuala Lumpur headquarters as well as the National Archives' state branches.
The portal at ofa.arkib.gov.my is accessible online to registered users. Registration is required to obtain a research number, which allows users to purchase, view documents, audio and visual materials, and use facilities in the Research Hall. Digital content of analogue materials can be ordered online via the portal. Viewing and booking of materials follows specific advance-booking requirements: three days for documents, five days for audio-visual materials, and fourteen days for film materials.
