NTV (CJON-DT)

Overview

NTV (CJON-DT) is an independent English-language television station licensed to St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, owned by Newfoundland Broadcasting Company Ltd. It is the province's only privately owned television station.

History

Newfoundland Broadcasting Company Ltd., jointly owned by Geoff Stirling and Don Jamieson, received Newfoundland's first television licence in 1955; the station launched Sept. 6, 1955, as a CBC Television affiliate. It affiliated with CTV after CBC opened its own Newfoundland station, CBNT, in 1964, and was rebranded NTV in 1978 to avoid confusion with an unrelated American NBC affiliate carried locally. In 1972 it became one of the first television stations in Canada to broadcast around the clock. NTV disaffiliated from CTV at the end of the 2001-02 season over programming fee disputes and has operated independently since. Geoff Stirling died in 2013; his son G. Scott Stirling assumed control of the company. NTV marked its 70th anniversary of broadcasting in 2026.

Notable works

The NTV Evening Newshour won an RTNDA Canada "Best Newscast - Medium Market" award in 1998 for a 1997 broadcast, among other individual reporting awards. Produced the award-winning 1991 documentary Dark Harvest, chronicling the Mount Cashel orphanage sexual abuse scandal, which aired nationally on CTV.
