The Norwegian Polar Data Centre (NPDC), operated by the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) in Tromsø, is the primary repository for scientific data, environmental monitoring data, and topographic and geological map data collected from the Arctic and Antarctic regions. The NPDC makes polar research data freely accessible in accordance with open data principles.
The Norwegian Polar Institute is a governmental directorate under the auspices of the Ministry of Climate and Environment. The institute employs approximately 150 staff at its main office at the Fram Centre in Tromsø, with additional presence in Longyearbyen (Svalbard) and at Antarctic research stations. NPI conducts extensive research programs in geosciences and life sciences, including biodiversity, ecotoxicology, geology, oceanography, and glaciology. Its main research platforms include the Sverdrup Station in Ny-Ålesund, the Troll Station in Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, and the research vessel FF Kronprins Haakon.
The NPDC manages datasets ranging from human field observations and in-situ sensor data to remote sensing products. Holdings also include photographic images, audio and video records, and an extensive map collection of several thousand maps primarily from the polar regions. In November 2015, the map archive was extended with approximately 400 maps from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The data centre follows FAIR data principles and provides open access through its online portal.
Scientific datasets are accessible through the NPDC portal at data.npolar.no, where users can search, browse, and download data. Map data and services are available through geodata.npolar.no. The NPDC is a member of the NorDataNet national infrastructure and contributes data to international polar research networks including the Svalbard Integrated Arctic Earth Observing System (SIOS).
