The Norwegian Open Research Archives (NORA) is Norway's national aggregator for open access institutional repositories, harvesting research outputs from universities, university colleges, and research institutes across Norway. NORA provides a centralized search interface for discovering open access scholarly publications and is part of the broader OpenAIRE network of European knowledge archives.
NORA was established as a cooperative effort among Norwegian open access archive-owning institutions, funded by the Ministry of Education and Research. The University of Tromsø Library served as the original host institution. NORA grew as Norway adopted open access policies, with the national goal that all publicly funded research should be made openly available. By the time of its maturity, NORA harvested approximately 70 Norwegian institutional repositories daily.
NORA aggregates metadata and full-text content from Norwegian institutional repositories hosted at state universities, university colleges, private colleges, and research institutes. Content types include journal articles, theses, working papers, reports, and other scholarly outputs. NORA also coordinates national metadata standards and vocabularies to ensure interoperability across institutions. Its search interface allows users to discover research from major Norwegian universities including Bergen, Oslo, Tromsø, and NTNU, as well as numerous specialized institutes.
NORA is freely accessible online and provides a national search facility for open access resources. It serves as a single point of harvesting for international services and connects to the larger OpenAIRE infrastructure. Researchers, students, and the general public can search the aggregated collection without charge. NORA has been progressively integrated with the Norwegian Research Information Repository (NVA) as Norway's open science infrastructure evolves.
