The Norwegian Centre for Research Data (NSD) was one of the world's largest research data archives, headquartered in Bergen, Norway. Founded in 1971, NSD provided data management, archival, and support services to the Norwegian and international research community. It operated as a limited company wholly owned by the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research.
NSD was established in 1971 following efforts by leading Norwegian social scientists to create a national research data archive. Until 2003, it was affiliated with the Research Council of Norway, after which it became a state-owned limited company. The organization was originally known as Norwegian Social Science Data Services, a name it retained until 1 March 2016, when it was renamed the Norwegian Centre for Research Data to reflect its broader scope across disciplines. In 2022, NSD was merged into Sikt – the Norwegian Agency for Shared Services in Education and Research.
NSD maintained extensive archives of social science and humanities data, making them available to researchers and students in Norway and internationally. The archive served as Norway's service provider within the CESSDA ERIC (Consortium of European Social Science Data Archives) network. Its holdings included survey data, register data, qualitative data, and metadata from across the Norwegian research sector. NSD employed nearly 100 staff and held one of the largest professional communities in Europe with expertise in personal data protection in research.
The NSD archive was a certified Trusted Digital Repository and adhered to the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable). Researchers could access data through NSD's online platforms, which have since transitioned to Sikt. NSD also assessed research projects involving personal data for compliance with data protection legislation and provided guidance and training.
Following its merger into Sikt in 2022, NSD's archival and data services were absorbed into the broader national infrastructure for education and research services. The legacy NSD brand and services continue under Sikt's umbrella at sikt.no.
