The Northern Light is the student-run newspaper of the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), operating with full editorial control and no involvement from outside professionals, funded primarily by student fees along with advertising revenue.
The Northern Light launched September 19, 1988, formed when the University of Alaska Anchorage merged with Anchorage Community College and combined their respective student newspapers, the UAA Voice and the ACC Accent. Its founding staff included Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist John Strohmeyer. The paper follows the Society of Professional Journalists' Code of Ethics and went digital-only in March 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, resuming limited print publication in February 2022.
