The school offers a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, combined majors including Journalism and English and Journalism and Political Science, and graduate degrees including an M.A. in Journalism and an M.S. in Media Innovation and Data Communication.
Students contribute to in-house publications including The Scope, Global Observer, and Storybench, and can pursue Northeastern's signature co-op program, six-month professional placements with media organizations. The school is affiliated with the Center for Communications, Media Innovation and Social Change and the Co-Laboratory for Data Impact, and received a $100,000 grant from Press Forward, a nationwide movement to strengthen local news.
The program traces to 1959, when Northeastern's English department began offering a journalism major. George A. Speers became the first chairman of the journalism department in 1965. The department was reorganized and renamed the School of Journalism in 1986, with LaRue Gilleland, former journalism department chairman at the University of Nevada, Reno, becoming its first director (1981-1992). A graduate program was approved in 1985. The school is housed within Northeastern's College of Arts, Media and Design (CAMD), established in 2010, in Lake Hall, a building constructed around 1911 that once belonged to the United Drug Company.
