Gannett Co., Inc. acquired certain assets of North Jersey Media Group Inc. from the Borg family on July 6, 2016, adding an estimated $90 million in annual revenue. Gannett Co., Inc. changed its corporate name to USA TODAY Co., Inc. effective November 18, 2025. North Jersey Media Group's titles are part of the USA TODAY Network, the company's system of local news brands.
Following the 2016 acquisition, Gannett announced a restructuring at North Jersey Media Group that issued WARN Act notices to 426 employees, with roughly half retained in new roles and the rest laid off by mid-November 2016. In 2021, journalists at the Bergen Record, the Daily Record, and the New Jersey Herald voted to unionize. In January 2022, Alden Global Capital announced a printing and packaging partnership with NJMG for the New York Daily News, beginning in March 2022. In March 2025, editorial staff at the Bergen Record voted to authorize a walkout amid prolonged first-contract bargaining with Gannett, citing what the union described as bad-faith negotiating. In September 2025, longtime executive editor Daniel Sforza, who had led the newsroom since 2018 and worked at The Record since 1994, departed to become a weekend editor at The New York Times. Gannett named Blake Kaplan, previously of a Mississippi newspaper, as his successor in January 2026.
Blake Kaplan has served as executive editor of the Bergen Record and NorthJersey.com since January 2026.
