The Direction des Archives Nationales du Niger is the government service responsible for Niger's national archives, based in Niamey. History

Niger's archives were initially governed by loi n° 60-24 and décret n° 6-099 of May 25 and May 31, 1960, shortly after independence, placing them under a government secretariat-general. The archives service was elevated to the status of a Direction by décret n° 88-190/PCMS/SGG of May 19, 1988, placing it under the authority of the Secretary General of the Government. An arrêté n° 18/PM/SGG of May 25, 1992 further organized the directions of the government secretariat-general and defined directors' responsibilities. Niger's foundational archives law, loi n° 97-021, was adopted June 30, 1997, and décret n° 98-091/PRN/SGG of April 6, 1998 set out its implementing modalities, including establishing a Conseil National des Archives (CNA) to assist the Direction.

Collections, Holdings, and Publications

Under its governing texts, the Direction's role is to inventory, classify, and preserve documents of all kinds belonging to the state and local authorities; to make documents available in accordance with archival legislation; to manage a documentation center open to the public; to accept donated or deposited archives from institutions or private individuals; and to apply management and preservation rules for public-service archives nationwide.

Access and Usage

The Conseil National des Archives, whose members adopted internal regulations in a session reported in December 2024, has identified ongoing challenges facing the archives service, including overcrowded storage, deteriorating infrastructure, a lack of modern restoration and digitization equipment, and a shortage of qualified personnel.
