Niamey, Niger
The Direction des Archives Nationales du Niger is the country's national archival authority, housed since 1974 in a purpose-built building in central Niamey.
The archive's colonial-era fonds derives from documents recovered from the cellar and attic of the presidency, corresponding to the remaining records of the Governor of Niger. These colonial institutional records occupy 175 linear meters and are organized into 21 thematic series, including Series A (official acts, collections of laws, decrees, orders, and circulars) and Series B (general correspondence and telegram registers). The archive moved into its current purpose-built Niamey headquarters in 1974.
The Direction des Archives Nationales holds approximately 7,000 linear meters of documents, divided between the colonial archives fonds (1897-1960) and the independent Niger fonds (1960 to the present), though in practice the chronological divisions overlap. Numerous ministerial and institutional fonds are held, including records from the presidency, the ministries of the interior, finance, foreign affairs, education, commerce, and sustainable development, as well as from Niger's National Assembly, national broadcaster (ORTN), and national lottery. The reading room provides free access to current Nigerien weekly newspapers, and the Direction also maintains its own library of documents about Niger.
The Direction des Archives Nationales has regional divisions, of which only three (Tahoua, Dosso, and Agadez) are open to the public with professional staff; the remaining regional centers (Diffa, Maradi, Tillabéry, Zinder) lack professional staff and are not fully operational, though their holdings can be consulted upon request.
