Use of DataThe Nichibunken Digital Archive is the publicly accessible digital collection of the International Research Center for Japanese Studies (国際日本文化研究センター, Kokusai Nihon Bunka Kenkyū Sentā), known as Nichibunken (日文研), based in Kyoto, Japan. The archive provides high-resolution digital access to a wide variety of historical materials held in Nichibunken's library and collections, all conforming to the IIIF (International Image Interoperability Framework) standard.
Nichibunken was established in May 1987 as an inter-university research institute funded by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT), under the administration of Prime Minister Nakasone Yasuhiro. It was founded with prominent philosopher Umehara Takeshi as its first Director-General. The center moved to its current site at Oeyama-chō, Nishikyō-ku, Kyoto in 1990. Nichibunken is one of the National Institutes for the Humanities and is affiliated with the national inter-university research network.
The Nichibunken Digital Archive allows users to browse image data across all genres of materials collected by the institute. Only materials for which copyright has expired or for which permission has been obtained are included. The broader database system features numerous specialized collections:
The archive's collection of digitised overseas Japanese-language newspapers is of particular value for media history, including titles from Japanese-American and Japanese diaspora communities. The popular magazines database (Visual Images in Modern Japanese Popular Magazines) offers a window into modern Japanese media culture.
The Nichibunken Digital Archive is freely accessible online. Some specialized databases require registration with Nichibunken. Researchers wishing to use materials for publication or broadcast must submit an Application for Special Use Privileges.
