Newspapers of New England was founded in the late 1970s as a holding company for properties owned by the Dwight family, longtime publishers of the Holyoke Transcript-Telegram. Nancy Dwight, widow of longtime NNE chairman Donald R. Dwight (who died in May 2025), continues to serve on the NNE board.
William G. Dwight joined the Holyoke Transcript's staff in 1881. Minnie Ryan Dwight and her son William Dwight Sr. expanded the family's newspaper holdings through the mid-20th century. Donald R. Dwight became chairman of NNE in 1982, a role he held for decades, publishing seven New England newspapers.
