Overview

Newspack is a publishing and revenue platform for independent news organizations. It is a project of WordPress.com and provides website publishing, audience, newsletter, donation, subscription, advertising, and revenue tools. It is not a general-purpose grantmaking foundation.

History

Newspack launched in 2019 to give local news organizations a powerful, cost-effective publishing platform designed for journalistic operations and financial sustainability. Its development has received support from the Google News Initiative, Knight Foundation, The Lenfest Institute, and other funders.

What sets it apart

The platform combines managed WordPress publishing technology with tools and services tailored to news organizations. It also operates training and coaching programs that help participating publishers use the platform to increase audience and revenue.

How to apply for funding

Newspack does not offer a standing grant application process. News organizations may request a product demonstration or apply to specific subsidized programs, such as the Revenue Development Program, when applications are open. That program provides free coaching and training through external philanthropic support rather than unrestricted grants from Newspack.

Leadership

Newspack is operated by a distributed team covering product, engineering, publisher success, growth, training, and revenue development. Kim Bode is Head of Growth Initiatives and leads the Revenue Development Program.
