New Haven, Connecticut, USA
New Haven Independent is a nonprofit, online-only daily news outlet covering New Haven, Connecticut, including its neighborhoods, government, schools, criminal justice, business, arts and culture. It is produced by the Online Journalism Project, which also publishes the Valley Independent Sentinel and operates community radio station WNHH FM (103.5).
The current New Haven Independent was founded in 2005 by journalist Paul Bass, one of the first two professional online-only nonprofit local news sites in the country. Bass raised a starting budget of $80,000 over three months before launching the site, which grew to a staff of five full-time reporters and a network of freelancers. Bass stepped down as editor in November 2022 after 17 years, handing the role to managing editor Tom Breen, who began writing for the Independent in 2015; Bass remained on staff as a full-time reporter and continued as executive director of the Online Journalism Project.
