Ownership

NBCUniversal is currently a subsidiary of Comcast Corporation, which acquired full ownership in 2011. Comcast is publicly traded, but Chairman and CEO Brian L. Roberts controls a nondilutable 33⅓ percent of total voting power through Class B super-voting shares held via a family-controlled LLC and trusts, despite the Roberts family owning a small fraction of total economic equity. On June 29, 2026, Comcast announced plans to spin off NBCUniversal (along with Sky) into a separate publicly traded company, following its January 2026 spin-off of cable networks CNBC, USA Network, and others into Versant Media Group. Comcast co-CEO Mike Cavanagh is set to become CEO of the standalone NBCUniversal; Comcast plans to retain up to 19.9 percent of NBCUniversal for up to a year after the transaction closes. As of this writing, the spin-off has not yet completed and is expected to take about a year, subject to board and regulatory approvals.

History

Comcast acquired a controlling stake in NBCUniversal from General Electric in 2011 and purchased the remaining stake in 2013.
