History and Background

The portal is part of Iran's broader Electronic Government Data Governance program, which developed in stages through the 2010s. Under President Hassan Rouhani's administration (2013–2021), e-government initiatives accelerated, and the National Data Catalogue at data.gov.ir was established as a transparency and open data resource. The portal publishes datasheets on national budgets, provincial allocations, administrative boundaries, economic indicators, and demographic data from the Statistical Centre of Iran (SCI).

The portal aggregates datasets across multiple domains including national budgets and provincial spending allocations, administrative boundary data, economic indicators, population and census statistics from the Statistical Centre of Iran, and data from multiple ministries and government agencies.
