Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia, Russia
The National Library of the Republic of Karelia is the central public library of Karelia, located in Petrozavodsk, Russia, on Pushkinskaya Street. It serves as the region's main library and information center and, since 2014, as the central office for a network of Russian Museum virtual-branch information and education centers in Karelian libraries.
October 15, 1833, is considered the founding date of the library, when it began operating from the home of Olonets Governor A. I. Yakovlev with a modest collection housed in three bookcases. The library's early service lapsed by the 1850s. It was re-established on January 2, 1860, at the initiative of public servant and folklorist P. N. Rybnikov, located in the Circular Square building of the Noble Assembly. Following a visit by Grand Duke Alexey Alexandrovich to Petrozavodsk, the library was placed on a permanent footing and took the name Alexeevskaya, later housed in the building of the former town detention barracks opposite the Gostiny Dvor. Sources describing Petrozavodsk's cultural institutions cite 1959 as a date associated with the library in its modern form.
The library's holdings comprise more than 1.6 million documents on a wide range of subjects, drawing roughly 10,000 visitors annually from Petrozavodsk and the wider Karelia region.
The library functions as an open venue for reading, community engagement, creative activities, and educational programming, including cultural events related to regional traditions such as Karelian and Vepsian heritage.
