Use of DataThe D-Library (Digital Library) of the National Library of Thailand (NLT; Thai: หอสมุดแห่งชาติ) is an online portal providing public access to digitized materials from the National Library's holdings. Launched as part of a broader digitization initiative begun in 2015, the D-Library makes selected documents, films, old photographs, and other primary materials from the NLT's collections available online, supporting access to Thailand's national intellectual and cultural heritage.
The National Library of Thailand is one of the oldest national libraries in Asia. It was officially established on 12 October 1905 when King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) ordered the merger of three existing royal libraries: the Mandira Dharma Library, the Vajirayanana Library, and the Buddhasasana Sangaha Library. The consolidated institution was initially named the Vajirayanana Library for the Capital City. Under King Rama VI, new premises were opened on 6 January 1916. Following changes in government, the library was placed under the Fine Arts Department of the Ministry of Culture. The NLT relocated to its current site on Samsen Road, Dusit, Bangkok in 1966. A major digitization initiative began in 2015, and the NLT subsequently launched the National Digital Library (D-Library) project and opened a new "smart library" building to improve services.
The National Library of Thailand holds over 5 million physical items, including stone inscriptions, palm leaf manuscripts (approximately 250,000, many in Pali relating to Buddhist texts), paper manuscripts, Thai traditional books, printed publications, and audio-visual and digital resources. The 2023 collection of palm-leaf manuscripts recounting the Phra That Phanom Chronicle was inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World International Register. Approximately 10,000 transcriptions and rubbings of stone inscriptions are available in digitized formats. The D-Library focuses on digitized documents, films, and old photographs.
The NLT's digitized collections include historical photographs, old Thai films, and documents reflecting public life, events, and media history in Thailand. These materials provide primary source documentation for the history of Thai print and visual media.
The D-Library is accessible online at digital.nlt.go.th. The NLT's main premises on Samsen Road are open Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The smart library building within the same compound offers extended hours Monday to Friday from 7:00 AM to 8:30 PM. The NLT also operates a mail-delivery service (The Reader Project) for patrons unable to visit in person.
