Use of DataThe National Memory Project (NMP) is an online digital platform developed and maintained by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP). It serves as a centralized repository of digitized Philippine historical materials, providing free public access to rare collections, unique items, and public domain materials from the NHCP's library, archives, and museum holdings.
The NMP originated from calls by local history and cultural networks for Philippine cultural agencies to make their digital collections available online. On June 30, 2019, the NHCP adopted the Baler Agenda, committing the agency to democratize its bibliographic, heraldic, archival, and museum collections through an online platform. Funded initially by the National Quincentennial Committee as a legacy project commemorating the 500th anniversary of Ferdinand Magellan's arrival in the Philippines, the seminal online platform launched on August 12, 2020. By 2023, the NMP became a dedicated component of the NHCP website at memory.nhcp.gov.ph.
The NMP offers access to several specialized collections and databases, including the Journal of Philippine Local History and Heritage, the Philippine Heraldry Registry (government seals, decorations, and military badges), the Philippine Local History Index, the National Registry of Historic Sites and Structures, and the NHCP Museums Collection. The archive also holds materials from partner institutions such as the Cebu City Cultural and Historical Affairs Office and the Juan D. Nepomuceno Center for Kapampangan Studies. Notable holdings include the Jose Rizal National Centennial Commission Collection, colonial-era manuscripts, Moro sultanate records, and oral history recordings. The platform enables deep search across item types including books, manuscripts, photographs, and archival documents.
The NMP is freely accessible to the public online without registration. It serves researchers, students, local historians, and the general public. A memorandum of agreement signed in March 2023 with the National Library of the Philippines expanded the NMP to include materials from the Jose Rizal National Centennial Commission Collection held by that institution.
