The National Film Archive of Iran, also known as the Iranian National Cinematheque (Persian: فیلمخانه ملی ایران; romanized: Filmkhane-ye Melli-ye Iran), is a non-profit film archive institution located in Tehran, Iran, adjacent to the Iranian Cinema Museum in the Ferdous Garden area. It serves as the principal repository for the preservation of Iranian cinematic heritage and a representative collection of world cinema.
The origins of the Iranian National Cinematheque date to 1949, when an assembly called the 'Film Center' was formed in recognition of the need to preserve cinematic works. This body was later renamed the 'Iran Film Archive,' and in 1973 it was renamed the 'Iran National Film Library.' After a prolonged hiatus, the Cinematheque re-established itself from 1984 onward, drawing on the experiences of leading international film archives. The institution is under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance and is listed as a project of the Department of Film Affairs (Filmkhane) at Baharestan Square, Tehran.
The National Film Archive of Iran acquires Iranian feature films both through donation and purchase, including the rights to newly produced Iranian feature-length films. It also holds a range of related materials. The archive has been a member of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) as a corresponding organization.
The archive is located within the Bagh-e Ferdows complex in Tehran. Researchers and film professionals may access collections through appointment with the institution. The archive also participates in cultural programming related to Iranian cinema history.
