The Sistema Archivistico Nazionale (SAN) is Italy's unified national archival portal, operated under the Italian Ministry of Culture (Ministero della Cultura) and managed by the Istituto Centrale per gli Archivi (ICAR). Launched on 17 December 2011, the SAN serves as the primary online access point for Italy's dispersed archival heritage, integrating information from national, regional, municipal, and private archival systems into a single coordinated platform.
The SAN portal was inaugurated in December 2011 as a project of the Direzione Generale per gli Archivi (General Directorate of Archives). Its development responded to the need to unify Italy's many independent archival information systems—including the state archive network, regional systems, and thematic databases—that had evolved separately over decades. Management of the portal was entrusted to ICAR, which coordinates ongoing editorial and technical work. By 2015, the platform incorporated data from approximately 35 national, regional, municipal, and thematic archival systems.
At the core of SAN is the Catalogo delle risorse archivistiche (CAT), a coordinated catalogue that describes archival collections across Italy. The CAT enables users to identify which archival resources exist in Italy, who produced them, where they are preserved, and how to access them. SAN also indicates which holdings can be consulted in digital form directly online through the digital libraries of state archives and other public and private archival institutions. Resources linked through the SAN include the Guide to State Archives (Guida generale degli archivi di Stato), SIAS (the unified information system of the State Archives), and SIUSA (the unified system of archival superintendencies), as well as important regional archival systems in Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna.
Through its linked systems, SAN provides pathways to millions of archival documents spanning medieval manuscripts, Fascist-era records, local government files, ecclesiastical archives, and private collections. For researchers in journalism and media history, SAN connects to the historical archives of institutions including newspapers, publishers, and broadcasting organizations that have deposited records with Italian state archives.
SAN is freely accessible online. Users can perform searches at the level of archive creators, custodial institutions, archival fonds, and series. The portal does not store full document images directly but provides metadata and links to source systems. Interoperability with other European archival portals is supported through shared standards. The platform welcomes collaboration from public and private national and international institutions.
