Overview

Nation Syndication is the commercial content licensing and syndication division of Nation Media Group (NMG), the largest private media house in East and Central Africa. Based in Nairobi, Kenya, Nation Syndication offers access to a substantial archive of photographs, editorial cartoons, videos, and other media content produced over the group's more than six decades of publishing history.

History and Founding

Nation Media Group was founded in 1959 by Aga Khan IV (His Highness Prince Shah Karim al-Hussaini) as East African Newspapers (Nation Series) Ltd. The Daily Nation, one of its flagship publications, first appeared in English on 3 October 1960. The group expanded throughout East Africa and, as of 2007, was the largest private media house in East and Central Africa, with operations in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda. The syndication archive draws on more than 60 years of photojournalistic and editorial material.

Collections and Holdings

The Nation Syndication archive contains historical and contemporary photographs documenting Kenyan, East African, and international events, as well as the editorial cartoon archive of the Daily Nation and other NMG publications. The cartoon archive includes the work of internationally recognised cartoonists such as GADO (Godfrey Mwampembwa), who worked with Nation Media Group from 1992 and won the Cartooning for Peace Award in 2016. The archive constitutes a significant record of East African political, social, and cultural history as seen through the lens of journalism.
