Use of DataThe Nagoya University Archives (名古屋大学大学文書資料室) is the official institutional archives of Nagoya University in Japan. Founded in 1996, it collects and preserves documentary records relating to the history of the university and has been designated by the Office of the Prime Minister of Japan as a facility for the preservation and presentation of specially designated historical public documents (tokutei reikishi kōbunsho).
The Archives was established in 1996 to serve as the institutional memory of Nagoya University. The university itself has roots stretching back to 1871 when a temporary medical school was founded; the institution was elevated to Nagoya Imperial University in 1939 (the 7th Imperial University in Japan) and renamed Nagoya University in 1947. In 2004 it became a National University Corporation.
The Archives collects and stores official university records, administrative documents, historical photographs, and materials documenting the development of Nagoya University and its predecessor institutions. As a designated repository for specially designated historical public documents under Japanese law, the Archives plays a formal role in the national framework for preserving government and academic heritage. Online access to the archive catalogue is available through the university's online material search system.
Researchers wishing to use the Archives must complete an information material request form (利用請求書), available in PDF format on the Archives website.
