The Myanmar Earthquake Committee (MEC) is a national expert body established under the Myanmar Engineering Society (MES), dedicated to earthquake preparedness, seismic hazard assessment, and structural safety throughout Myanmar. It conducts scientific research, disseminates earthquake reports, and supports disaster risk reduction activities in one of Southeast Asia's most seismically active countries.
MEC was established in 1999 under the umbrella of the Myanmar Engineering Society as a non-profit organization to develop knowledge in earthquake sciences and earthquake engineering for Myanmar. Funding for research and technical activities is primarily provided by the MES and donors. In June 2022, MEC received ISO 9001:2015 certification from IQC Myanmar for its quality management system, covering earthquake and natural disaster research, training, professional development, consulting, and disaster reduction activities.
MEC maintains historical earthquake records, fault maps, seismic intensity data, and research reports relating to Myanmar's seismic activity. Myanmar is situated at the intersection of multiple tectonic plates and is crossed by the Sagaing Fault, one of the most active strike-slip fault systems in the world. MEC has documented historical earthquake events dating to the nineteenth century and earlier, including the impacts of significant historical earthquakes on heritage sites such as the Bagan temples. The committee's publications and data resources are accessible through its website.
Myanmar's seismicity gained international attention with the catastrophic Mw 7.7 earthquake of 28 March 2025, which struck near Mandalay along the Sagaing Fault and resulted in over 5,000 fatalities, making it the most powerful earthquake in Myanmar since 1912 and a major focus of international research and relief efforts.
MEC's research reports, earthquake data, and educational resources are publicly accessible through its website at myanmarearthquakecommittee.org. The committee serves as a focal organization linking to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, which operates Myanmar's national seismic network.
