Overview

Mountain View Voice is an independent, wholly online newspaper covering Mountain View, California, published by the nonprofit Embarcadero Media Foundation.

History

Established in December 1992 by Kate Wakerly and Carol Torgrimson as a monthly independent paper initially called the Voice of Mountain View. Sold to Embarcadero Publishing Co. in March 1994, which converted it to a weekly. It ceased physical print publication in March 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic and has operated online-only since. Embarcadero Media transitioned to nonprofit status in 2024, becoming the Embarcadero Media Foundation; its editorial and design staff unionized in 2023.

Notable works

Won the 2018 California Journalism Award for General Excellence. A 2024 Voice investigation found that the Mountain View Police Department had accidentally shared access to its Automated License Plate Reader system with federal and state authorities in violation of its own policy and state law; the city subsequently shut off its ALPR system, citing vendor Flock Safety.
