Use of DataThe Centre National de Documentation et de Recherche Scientifique (CNDRS), or National Centre for Documentation and Scientific Research, is the principal research, documentation, and cultural heritage institution of the Union of the Comoros. It is headquartered in Moroni, the capital of Grande Comore island. The CNDRS houses the Comoros National Library, a museum of cultural and natural history, and operates the Observatoire Volcanologique du Karthala, the volcano observatory monitoring the active Karthala stratovolcano on Grande Comore.
The CNDRS was formally constituted on 11 January 1979, according to the Bibliothèque nationale de France's authority records. It was established to serve as the country's central repository of scientific and cultural knowledge following Comorian independence in 1975. The centre operates as a government institution and has been active in international research collaborations, particularly in the areas of volcanology, herpetology, biodiversity, and linguistics. It is a member of the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie.
The CNDRS houses the National Library of the Comoros, which holds published and archival materials related to Comorian history, culture, and society. The institution also maintains a cultural and historical museum, a small bookshop, and the Observatoire Volcanologique du Karthala with a seismological monitoring network of eight stations deployed around the Karthala massif. The CNDRS has collaborated extensively with international researchers on taxonomy and biogeography of Comorian fauna, volcanic hazard assessment, and intangible cultural heritage documentation including Comorian language and oral traditions.
The CNDRS reading rooms and museum are accessible to researchers and the public. The institution has been used by historians studying Comorian decolonization and the Indian Ocean region, as well as by natural scientists researching Comorian ecology and volcanism.
