Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), began the foundation in 2007. hoping to to facilitate the spread of knowledge and research in the Arab world. The foundation pledges to establish funded research projects for knowledge-based societies. Areas of support include R&D, education, and entrepreneurship.
In 2014 the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Award (MBRKA) was announced. The first awards, each accompanied by a $1 million cash prize, went to World Wide Web founder Tim Berners-Lee and Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales. Other award recipients include roboticist Hiroshi Ishiguro, philanthropist Melinda Gates, and journalist Ahmad Mazin Alshugairi.
