Degrees offered

The school offers a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, a Bachelor of Science in Integrated Marketing Communications, a Bachelor of Arts in Media and Communication, a Master of Arts in Journalism, and a Master of Science in Integrated Marketing Communication.

Programs and emphasis

Students gain hands-on experience at the S. Gale Denley Student Media Center, where they can be published in The Daily Mississippian, work at the campus yearbook, report for NewsWatch or Rebel Radio, or work in the student-run advertising division. The school also houses the Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics and the Jordan Center for Journalism Advocacy and Innovation.

History

The school was founded as the Department of Journalism in 1947 and established as the School of Journalism and New Media on July 1, 2009.

Andrea Hickerson: Dean of the School of Journalism and New Media since July 2022, previously director of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of South Carolina.
Debora Wenger: Interim dean prior to Hickerson's arrival.

Student-run media

The Daily Mississippian is the university's student newspaper, based at the S. Gale Denley Student Media Center.
