The Department of Communication, Media & Theatre, within the College of Arts & Sciences, offers a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with concentrations in Broadcast and Digital Journalism, Communication and Media Studies, Print and Digital Journalism, Public Relations, and Theatre, serving roughly 500-600 majors.
The Broadcast and Digital Journalism concentration culminates in the capstone Take 30 TV News program, while the Print and Digital Journalism concentration culminates in the Bulldog Online Newsroom, launched in spring 2021. Students work with campus media outlets including Hail State Productions/SEC Network, radio station WMSV-FM, and the Reflector newspaper. The department opened its Digital Media Center in fall 2019.
The department began as the Department of Speech in fall 1962 under Dr. E. Samuel Dudley, inheriting a student theatre group and courses from the Department of English. It later became the beneficiary of a memorial fund honoring MSU alumnus Turner Catledge, a former editor of The New York Times, which has funded scholarships, travel support, and computer labs.
