Use of DataThe MIMU GeoNode is an online geospatial data repository operated by the Myanmar Information Management Unit (MIMU), a United Nations-supported body that provides geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial data resources to support humanitarian and development activities in Myanmar. The GeoNode platform allows users to freely download, view, and work with standardized geospatial datasets covering administrative boundaries, infrastructure, population, and land use across Myanmar.
MIMU was established to fill a gap in standardized geospatial data infrastructure for humanitarian and development organizations working in Myanmar. The unit operates under a UN umbrella and compiles and maintains core datasets—particularly the MIMU Place Code (Pcode) system—used for location referencing at national, state/region, district, township, village tract, and village levels. The GeoNode platform makes these datasets freely accessible for operational use.
The MIMU GeoNode hosts a broad range of geospatial datasets, including:
As of recent updates, the GeoNode contains 59 different geospatial layers/datasets, 22 of which were developed directly by MIMU. MIMU is also a member of Sentinel Asia's regional network, contributing flood-affected area data during disasters such as the 2020 monsoon.
All MIMU geospatial datasets are available free of charge for non-commercial use, with attribution required. Datasets can be downloaded in ESRI Shapefile and GeoJSON formats. Use on online platforms requires prior written agreement from MIMU. The platform is intended for operational humanitarian and development purposes only and cannot be used commercially.
