The school offers two degrees across ten concentrations within the Scott Borchetta College of Media and Entertainment.
Students gain experience through Middle Tennessee News and MTN Sports, the two divisions of the school's student-run broadcast news organization; Ever Blue Branding, a student-run advertising agency; and the Center for Innovation in Media, which houses WMOT (an NPR affiliate) and WMTS, the student-run campus radio station.
The program was approved in 1972, when Ed Kimbrell founded the Department of Mass Communications with sequences in advertising and public relations, news-editorial, graphics and photography, and broadcasting. It became the College of Mass Communications in 1989, was renamed the College of Media and Entertainment in 2015, and the School of Journalism was renamed the School of Journalism and Strategic Media on July 1, 2018. The school celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022.
