The Archives of Michigan preserves and makes available the records of Michigan government and other public institutions, along with documents, maps, photographs, and film from private individuals and organizations.
The State Archives was established in 1913. It is housed within the Michigan History Center (formerly the Michigan Library and Historical Center), which also contains the Library of Michigan and the Michigan History Museum, opened in March 1989 as part of the Michigan Capitol Complex in Lansing.
Holdings include more than 100 million state and local government records and private papers, 330,000 photographs, and 500,000 maps, plus films and audio tapes, with documents dating back to 1792 (some sources cite 1797). The Michigan History Center also operates the Michigan History Museum System, a 12-site state bureau of publicly interpreted historical museums and locations.
The Archives of Michigan is located at 702 W. Kalamazoo Street, Lansing, Michigan.
