Coral Gables, Florida, USA
The School of Communication offers a Bachelor of Science in Communication across ten majors organized within five departments: Cinematic Arts, Communication Studies, Interactive Media, Journalism and Media Management (Broadcast Journalism, Electronic Media, Journalism, Media Management), and Strategic Communication (Advertising, Public Relations). Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Fine Arts, and Ph.D. degrees are also offered.
Students use on-campus television and radio facilities, soundstages, and the Interactive Media Center, a student-driven co-working space with touch-screen monitors and dry-erase walls for collaborative projects. The school supports student chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists, the American Advertising Association, and other professional organizations.
The School of Communication was established as a separate entity from the College of Arts and Sciences under a recommendation from Board of Trustees member David Kraslow, following advocacy from faculty including Dr. Mitchell Shapiro, who had returned to run the broadcast and broadcast journalism programs in 1982.
Karin Gwinn Wilkins: Dean since September 2019, the school's fourth dean and first woman dean, previously associate dean at the University of Texas at Austin's Moody College of Communication.
Gregory J. Shepherd: Former dean, whom Wilkins succeeded.
Mitchell Shapiro: Longtime professor who helped establish the School's broadcast journalism programs.
The Miami Hurricane is the university's independent student newspaper.
