Memórica: México, haz memoria (memoricamexico.gob.mx) is an open-access digital repository operated by the Dirección General de la Coordinación de Memoria Histórica y Cultural de México, a unit of the Archivo General de la Nación (AGN). Its primary purpose is to make available to the public a wide variety of digitized archival materials related to Mexican history and cultural expression, spanning from the sixteenth century to the present.
The platform was developed under principles of open access and free software (its code is released under the Apache 2.0 licence), and uses interoperability protocols to communicate with other information systems across participating institutions. It was designed to build on and make visible the digitization efforts of dozens of public and private Mexican institutions over the preceding three decades. The portal was further expanded through agreements with media organizations; in September 2020, Excélsior (Grupo Imagen Multimedia) became the first news outlet to sign a collaboration agreement with Memórica, integrating its historical archive of more than 37,600 editions and publications dating to 1917.
Memórica aggregates digital resources contributed by numerous public and private institutions. Holdings include historical documents, photographs, manuscripts, film footage, recordings, periodicals, and publications. The portal hosts interactive educational resources, documentary films with a focus on urban life and cultural identity, and thematic digital exhibits covering key events and cultural expressions from Mexican history. Materials contributed by partnering archives are continuously normalized, standardized, and validated.
Memórica is notable for its collaboration with press and media institutions. The Excélsior newspaper archive—spanning over a century of editions from 1917 onward—is among the most significant journalism-related collections available through the platform. The portal also holds digitized periodicals and magazines from the early twentieth century contributed by affiliated institutions including the Consejo Nacional de Archivos (Conarch).
All materials on Memórica are freely accessible online. The repository supports open reuse under open access principles. Resources are searchable by topic, type, and institution. Dedicated sections are provided for educators, students, and researchers. The portal also includes a section for children with interactive learning tools.
