Use of DataMediateca INAH is the open-access digital repository of the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH), Mexico's federal agency for the preservation and promotion of archaeological sites, historical monuments, and cultural heritage. INAH was founded in 1939. The current Mediateca platform was designed and developed beginning in early 2014 by INAH's Dirección de Mediateca, part of the Coordinación Nacional de Difusión, and launched publicly in that year.
Mediateca INAH is the largest digital repository of Mexico's cultural heritage. It brings together over half a million interrelated digital files including images, audio recordings, video, maps, paintings, sculptures, photographs, books, codices, virtual tours, and archaeological site data from across Mexico's extensive network of INAH institutions. The repository integrates content from INAH's museums, research centres, libraries, and archaeological zones across the country — comparable in scope to the Smithsonian Institution in the United States. Notable collections include the Códices de México collection (44 digitised codices), photographic archives, and publications by INAH researchers.
The platform was developed in-house using free and open-source software, implementing international standards for archival cataloguing, digital preservation, and interoperability (OAI-PMH). It uses the Islandora/DSpace-based framework and supports multiple cataloguing standards.
While primarily a cultural heritage repository, Mediateca INAH includes documentary films, video capsules, and publications relevant to Mexico's cultural and historical journalism. The blog section provides thematic overviews and contextual information linking archival materials to broader research topics.
Mediateca INAH is freely accessible online. Materials may be used for personal and non-profit purposes without alteration, provided full attribution is given and the repository is cited as the source. Commercial or other uses require following the guidelines in the Preguntas frecuentes section of the site.
