The Media Law Resource Center (MLRC) is a New York-based nonprofit membership association for media organizations and the lawyers who represent them, formed to monitor legal developments and promote First Amendment rights in libel, privacy and related fields. Originally founded in 1980 as the Libel Defense Resource Center, it changed its name in 2003 to reflect a broader focus spanning privacy, newsgathering, fair use, internet law and international media law.
MLRC provides its more than 120 media-company members and 200-plus affiliated defense law firms with daily and monthly updates on legal, regulatory and legislative developments, along with litigation practice guides, annual 50-state surveys on libel, privacy and employment law, and national and international media law conferences. Its charitable affiliate, the MLRC Institute, funds free legal workshops for independent and freelance journalists who lack institutional legal protection.
A coalition of American publishers and broadcasters founded the organization in November 1980 as the Libel Defense Resource Center to help member outlets defend against libel litigation amid a wave of large jury verdicts against news organizations. As its work expanded into privacy, newsgathering and digital media law, the group renamed itself the Media Law Resource Center in 2003.
MLRC is a nonpartisan professional association rather than an advocacy organization; its membership spans commercial, nonprofit and public media outlets across the political spectrum, united by a shared interest in First Amendment and media-law protections rather than any single ideological position.
George Freeman, a former Assistant General Counsel of The New York Times Company, has served as Executive Director. Dave Heller and Jeff Hermes have served as Deputy Directors, with Hermes focused on digital media law and Heller focused on MLRC's international programs.
