The Archives Nationales de Mauritanie (National Archives of Mauritania) was founded in 1955, during the final years of French colonial administration of Mauritania. The institution predates Mauritanian independence, which was achieved on 28 November 1960. The archives are affiliated with the General Delegation of National Archives under the Government of Mauritania. As of 2007, the archives were located on Avenue de l'Indépendance in Nouakchott, the Mauritanian capital established in 1958.
The National Archives of Mauritania holds approximately 3,000 volumes according to available records. Holdings reflect the administrative history of Mauritania from the colonial period through independence and the post-independence era. The collection includes official government records, administrative correspondence, and other materials documenting the history of the Mauritanian state. French colonial records predating 1919 relating to Mauritania are also held at the Archives nationales d'outre-mer (ANOM) in Aix-en-Provence, France.
The archives are located in central Nouakchott. Researchers wishing to consult materials should contact the institution directly. Access conditions may vary for sensitive or restricted record series.
