The W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications offers a Bachelor of Arts degree with seven majors, including advertising/public relations, journalism, and media production, plus a graduate program accredited by ACEJMC.
Students gain hands-on experience through The Parthenon, the university's independent student newspaper; WMUL-FM, the campus radio station; and JMC TV, home to the news program MU Report. College Factual ranked Marshall a top program for communication and journalism in 2023.
William Page Pitt entered a 45-year relationship with Marshall College (now Marshall University) in 1926, teaching one journalism class of five students after then-president Morris P. Shawkey hired him to teach and supervise The Parthenon. Pitt remained a professor of journalism at Marshall until 1971 and is considered the founder of its journalism program. The school has been nationally accredited by ACEJMC since 1976 and was most recently reaccredited in 2022.
