New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
The Maroon is the weekly student newspaper of Loyola University New Orleans, publishing issues on Friday mornings during the regular school year as part of Loyola Student Media, alongside Wolf Magazine, The Maroon Online and Pack News. The paper describes itself not as a student newspaper but as a community newspaper serving a university.
The Maroon began publication in 1923, the same year Loyola's first fraternity, the Beggars, was founded. It has covered Loyola through the Great Depression, World War II, the civil rights era and the rebuilding of the university following Hurricane Katrina. Its online platform launched in 1998. In 2017, Maroon staff won seven awards, including three firsts, in the Catholic Press Association's national competition. Graduates of the paper have gone on to The New York Times, CNN, The Washington Post, The Times-Picayune and the Associated Press.
