The National Library of Mali (French: Direction nationale des Bibliothèques et de la Documentation, abbreviated DNBD) is Mali's primary public institution for collecting, preserving, and disseminating national bibliographic and documentary heritage. Located in Bamako, it is affiliated with the Ministry of Culture, Handicrafts and Tourism of the Government of Mali. The library serves as the national legal deposit institution and coordinates library services across the country.
The library's origins trace to the colonial period. In 1936, the Institut Français d'Afrique Noire (IFAN) was established with a branch in Bamako (then capital of French Sudan) to study and document West African languages, histories, and cultures. Following Mali's independence on 22 September 1960, the IFAN Centre in Bamako was renamed the Institut des Sciences Humaines (ISH) in 1962. The collections of the ISH were divided among three successor institutions: the National Library, the National Archives, and the National Museum. The Government Library was transferred from Koulouba to Avenue Kasse Keita in Ouolofobougou, Bamako, on 29 February 1968. The National Library was formally created by law on 17 March 1984 (Law No. 84). Its present home, in the Hamdallaye ACI 2000 area of Bamako, was established with a new building in a later phase of development.
The National Library holds approximately 20,000 volumes as of the early 2000s, comprising books, periodicals, theses, manuscripts, and specialized materials on Malian history, culture, and sciences. The collection is available free of charge for in-house viewing; borrowing privileges are available via membership card. Since 2004, the library has hosted the African Photography House (Maison Africaine de la Photographie), which organizes the biennial African Photography Encounters festival (Rencontres de Bamako).
The library's periodicals and documentation collections include materials covering Malian political, social, and cultural history. The legal deposit mandate ensures that national publications, including newspapers and periodicals, are deposited and preserved.
Books and periodicals are available free of charge for in-house reading. Users may obtain a membership card for borrowing privileges. The library is open to the general public.
