Madras Courier is a digital news and long-form journalism outlet based in Chennai, India, covering South Indian politics, culture, society and the Global South.
The original Madras Courier was founded on October 12, 1785, by Richard Johnston, a former British Army officer, becoming the first newspaper in the Madras Presidency and the second in India after the Bengal Gazette; it published for 36 years before ceasing around 1821. The brand was revived digitally on October 12, 2016, by founder and editor-in-chief Shrenik Rao, who also founded 7MB, a digital media investment company.
The revived Madras Courier won Best Digital News Start-up at the South Asian Digital Media Awards in 2018, and publishes long-form categories including Insight, Policy, Opinion and Environment coverage.
