The National Library of Madagascar (French: Bibliothèque nationale de Madagascar; Malagasy: Tranomboky-Pirenena) is the national library of Madagascar, located in Antananarivo. It is affiliated with the Ministry of Culture and Communication of the Government of Madagascar and serves as the country's primary institution for collecting, preserving, and disseminating national bibliographic and documentary heritage.
The library's origins trace to the colonial period. A library for the colonial administration was established at Koulouba (then Tananarive) in 1920 under the French colonial government. Following Madagascar's independence in 1960, the National Library was formally established in 1961, inheriting the pre-existing government library collection of approximately 86,000 volumes from the former General Government Library. From 1961 to 1973, the library served simultaneously as a national library, a public library for Antananarivo, and a national documentation centre for research. A National Library Service was created in 1973 to extend these functions. In 1968, the library moved to Avenue Kasse Keita in the Ouolofobougou district of Bamako. A new building was inaugurated in 1982.
The National Library holds approximately 236,000 volumes including printed books, manuscripts, periodicals, photographs, and maps. The collection is particularly strong in materials relating to Malagasy history, culture, and society. The library receives publications through legal deposit and maintains the national bibliography. Manuscripts in Arabic script preserved by the peoples of southeastern Madagascar form part of the historical collections.
The library holds Malagasy-language and French-language periodicals and newspapers documenting Madagascar's history. Exhibitions promoting Malagasy culture are held regularly. Since 2004, the library has housed the African Photography House, which organizes the African Photography Encounters (Rencontres de Bamako) biennial photography festival.
Books and periodicals are available free of charge for in-house viewing. Borrowing privileges may be obtained with a registered library card. The library accepts researchers and the general public.
