Longboat Observer is a free weekly newspaper distributed primarily on Longboat Key, Florida, and other parts of the Sarasota-Bradenton area. It is the founding publication of Observer Media Group.
Founded by Ralph and Claire Hunter, who published the first issue on July 28, 1978, in seven copies of four pages. In March 1995, Matt and Lisa Walsh, with the help of Lisa's parents and a small group of investors, purchased the Longboat Observer from the Hunters, forming the private company that became Observer Media Group. Observer Media Group has since grown to seven newspapers, nine quarterly magazines and four news websites across Florida.
Named "Newspaper of the Year" in its circulation category by the Local Media Association in 2012, 2013 and 2015.
