The National Library of Libya (Arabic: دار الكتب الوطنية, Dar al-Kutub al-Wataniyya) is located in Benghazi, Libya's second largest city. It was established in 1972, following the need for a dedicated national library distinct from the university library that had served in a similar capacity since 1955. A proclamation in 1984 formally designated it as a legal deposit library. The institution is affiliated with the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Libya.
The National Library holds approximately 150,000 volumes, encompassing books, scientific publications, theses, local periodicals, rare books, and official government reports. Its archival holdings include documents spanning several decades of Libyan history. The library collects materials published in Libya, by Libyan citizens, and works dealing with Libyan subject matter, functioning as the primary legal deposit institution for the country.
The National Library serves researchers, students, and the general public in the Benghazi region and beyond. Access to the collections is available during regular library hours. Given the political instability that has affected Libya since 2011, prospective visitors and researchers are advised to verify operational status and access conditions before planning visits.
