The National Public Library of Liberia is the national library of the Republic of Liberia, located on Ashmun Street in Monrovia. It operates under the authority of the Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Education, and serves as a principal public information and literacy resource for Liberian citizens.
The library was established in 1972. It is housed in the historic building on Ashmun Street in Monrovia that previously served as the First Executive Mansion of Liberia. The facility has endured the consequences of Liberia's civil conflicts (1989–2004), which severely damaged the country's broader library infrastructure. Reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts have been ongoing in the decades since the conflict.
The library's collections include general reference materials, periodicals, and works related to Liberian history and culture. Holdings were substantially depleted during the civil war years. Efforts to rebuild the collection have included support from international organizations and the Liberian diaspora.
The National Public Library of Liberia is open to the general public in Monrovia. It provides reference services and reading room facilities to patrons.
