The University of KawaZulu-Natal engages with contemporary culture, especially in the media of film, television, newspaper, radio, and digital media

Students in the program can collaborate with Capital Radio Pietermaritzburg. There are undergraduate and postgraduate programs, and the university is associated with Howard University in the United States. Media and cultural studies include filmmaking. Dee Viney initiated a Media Outreach Programme in which the Media and Cultural Studies students develop ‘skilling’ and educational programs for young school learners in disadvantaged schools using media forms (cellphones, newspapers, etc.) and texts (DVDs, newspapers, etc.) and elements of performance to develop children’s confidence, creativity and knowledge.
