The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is a national private foundation with strong local roots. It invests in journalism, arts and culture, information and society, and community impact to support informed, engaged communities and a more effective democracy.
Knight Foundation was founded in 1950. Its place-based work continues the civic legacy of brothers John S. and James L. Knight in the communities where they owned and operated newspapers.
Knight combines national field-building investments with sustained work in 26 Knight communities. Its journalism funding includes newsroom operations, legal and technology infrastructure, audience development, revenue tools, and training.
Knight evaluates proposals for alignment with its focus areas, measurable outcomes, community relevance, organizational capacity, and potential for learning or field-building. Many grants are developed through program strategies, while open opportunities and calls are published on its website.
Maribel Pérez Wadsworth is President and Chief Executive Officer. Program vice presidents lead journalism, arts, information and society, and community-impact portfolios.
