The KMA Open MET Data Portal is the official open meteorological data platform of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), South Korea's national meteorological service. The portal provides free public access to historical and real-time weather data, climatological statistics, and observational records compiled by the KMA.
The Korea Meteorological Administration traces its institutional origins to 1904, when temporary observatories were established in Busan, Incheon, and Mokpo. The Central Meteorological Office was formally established in August 1949, and the current Korea Meteorological Administration was constituted in 1990. As of 2025, the KMA operates under the Ministry of Environment. The Open MET Data Portal was developed as part of broader open data initiatives to make KMA's extensive meteorological archive accessible to researchers, developers, and the general public.
The portal offers over 100 years of climatological statistics for Korea, accessible by location and meteorological element. It provides 18 different statistical analysis types and includes data from surface observation stations, upper-air soundings, satellite observations, and radar networks. A Weather and Climate Catalog lists available datasets with detailed descriptions. Open API services are also available for developers.
Data is freely accessible online via the portal's map-based interface, allowing users to select locations and retrieve weather data in various formats. Developers may use the open API for system integration. The portal provides downloadable datasets and supports long-term research on Korean climate trends.
